Hurricane Irma has shown sustained winds of more than 200 mph as it roared through the Caribbean, an incredible strength outlined by a video shared by a stunned woman on Twitter.
The video, which has now been retweeted thousands of times, shows a Caribbean bay devoid of water.
The woman wrote: “I am in disbelief right now. This is Long Island, Bahamas and the ocean water is missing!” The video shows the woman, whose Twitter handle identifies her as Kaydi, reacting to the phenomenon.
With strong winds in the background she shows an ocean expanse with only puddles of water atop the sand and mud.
Other stunned locals walk on the sand, which is usually covered by feet of water, and pick up huge shells now lying on the surface. Despite concerned Twitter users warning her a tsunami was imminent, due to the similar phenomenon which occurs before a huge waves arrives at shore, meteorologists had a more simply explanation.
